Xamar, the resilient city

Post by Lamagoodle »

News about Somalia often contains nonsense about the success of Balluchistans aka tribal enclaves, news about aqoonyahano aan aqoon lahayn, waxgarad aan waxba garaneeynin, culumaaudin aan culuun lahayn, dawlad aan dawlad ahayn.

We somalis love news and cameras. We love xafladdo and considering this is the silly season (elections), there will be plenty of these which will be reported on tribal websites . Also the commercial TV stations (do we need these many?) will be filled with “news” about xaflad aad loo soo agaasimey, oo aay ka qeyb galeen aqoonyahano, waxgarad, culumaaudiin etc.

Since we love to see ourselves on TVs, so called reporters are making a lot of money. What we are witnessing my friends on Somali TV stations is nothing short of “I arkaay”. The naked emperor of waan daadshe.

The circus nation episode 2.

Well, there are some things that are happening in Xamar and probably in other areas of our nation. These good stuff is often not reported on...

•Gym (both female and male). For ten dollars a month, you could lose weight and become desirable. Don’t be surprised a xusul baruur calling you and informing you that she is off to the gym.

•Kindergarten/ Nursery for the kids. Would you believe this? There are dozens of them in Xamar. Most of the kids have stay at home moms but taking your child is viewed as climbing the social ladder

•Garbage collection; for a few dollars a month, you get your garbage collected . Don’t ask where these are taken

•School buses. Kids use shuttle buses

• Many restaurants offer to your step food

•Catering is very common; if you want an eccentric wedding , there are companies that provide all inclusive.

•The Liido area is one of the most expensive places in Africa; diaspora and the corrupt officials have ensured that prices are in parity with that of the Riviera.

•The population has adopted a digital currency. Even the maid, the beggar and the macalin quraan uses the internet .. iigu soo dir/shub is very common.

There is a disconnect between politicians and citizens. The political class - shaxaad nation- only exists on cyberspace and on TV sets.

Lama, Kacaan era Somalis had been living in a bubble (land-cruiser,villa) lifestyle, and now People are living the the same bubble.
Dozens of regional administrations whose sole purpose is of just being regional admins ( anna wa i kan) ,and endless trips to Addis, Kenya, Djibouti with no clear purpose or reasons. Ministers without posts, army without equipment..the list is endless.

True but there is a trickle down. a consumption economy, no tangible production and diaspora money have all combined to create a bubble atmosphere. Industrial output is zero. Imports; export ratio of nearly 10:1. We even import products that are easily to manufacture. We are a petrodollar economy without petrol.

The good news; there is no private debt.

Despite these, life in Xamar is really better than what it has been for decades. People are learning; the service industry is growing.

Lama, don't forget the SMEs; soda and water plants, foam, soap, plastic bags, windows and doors and fishing boats manufacturers etc.

Great things are happening in Xamar. So it is not only the service sector?

Next step should be a change of food culture.
Encourage the consumption of homegrown food; Muxuga, misago, galeey and others. We do not need baasto and bariis . It is encouraging to see that somalis have started consuming fish

P.s. The Tuktuks are making a mark in Xamar.

Lama-goodle, do you think the money that is being poured in Somalia by the IC is free? I doubt it. I think the Somali debt had surpassed beyond belief.

Zidane, I wrote private debt. There are virtually no lending banks/institutions and the private sector is fine. The public debt is about 93% of GDP. As of 2014, Somalia's debt (public) debt amounted to cirka 5-6 Billion US dollars.

We have also inherited a large debt from the 1980s; some of these have been written off but it is huge.

Xamar would be my favourite city if I could visit. Temperate Mediterranean climate, beautiful sea and beaches and good food. The problem with Xamar is not the city, it's the people. Not the shopkeeper or the dressmaker but the bureaucrats and corrupt politicians.

Lamagodle...

I am impressed. The best days lie ahead and it has become my favorite pasttime to call out detractors of the city when they tell me that they have been or are going there.
