Somalia has two major rivers and the largest coastline in Africa, yet we are content with building on drought-prone regions and fighting over tiny sandblown shantytowns. Instead of fighting over Galkacyo, why not develop Hobyo?Somalis should build more cities on the Sea

Re: Somalis should build more cities on the Sea
You are right and I agree with you, Garcad and Hobyo are both far superior places both in climate, fertile lands, food and more water resources, as for someone that has been to Gaalkacayo on both sides for a significant amount of time, with the harsh climate and droughts, I wonder how people even survive there.
The reason doesn't have much to do with stupidity, in the Somali traditions in the past people moved very far away from coastal places, it's not just Somali's that did this, but the main reasons were the fear of invasion which always came via the sea routes all of a sudden with no warnings, Somali's have suffered from many of them over centuries, Berbera, Hobyo, Mogadishu, Zeila were all victims of this. Stories spread of the horrific atrocities people suffered which played a factor.
The pastoral life style was also not favourable to living in coastal places particularly for the animal's, on top of this Somali's in general in the past despised fish or other sea foods, there was a lot of myth and folklore associated with this, this is why in general fast majority stayed away from them with the threat of invasion being the worst.
But a new movement has been born due to trade, commerce and sustainability advantages and thus many Somali's have now focused on rebuilding coastal cities or those on the coast, we can already see this happening at a good pace on the ground as people are waking up to the tremendous benefits and the lack of threats that drove people away in the past.
You need to have more faith in your people and stop being so overly critical. I can guarantee you yourself recently woke up to this, there are thousands that had that awakening before you and even more that are now actively doing something in those places.

For a minute I thought reclaiming land from the sea, which requires major capital investment. Soomalida xanuun qabil bee ku wala dhashaan, ingrained in our collective dna. I believe we should all go our separate ways, at least a dozen new republics at sovereign level. We will then all live in peace. If you can sustain yourself as a viable country, why not.

I have long advocated for the construction of a great coastal road/railway from Djibouti -Kenya.
This is an essential first step in developing the Somali coast.....later will come ports, airports, resorts, industries, marine parks etc.

Coastal highlands are the best, you get the advantage of both cool high altitude weather and easy access to beaches and the coastline. Im thinking of Erigabo in particular maybe even Badhan, Qardho etc.original dervish wrote:I have long advocated for the construction of a great coastal road/railway from Djibouti -Kenya.

Map has forgotten some towns.
Re: Somalis should build more cities on the Sea
somalis had some anti-sea culture, looked down to the fish and sea jobs
there were other somali classes that lived in the coastal area. jaaji were living in the coastal north banadir from ceelmacaan at kaaran to xarar dhdheere
i have met one of them and he told me that somalis now marry from them bc they started doing the same jobs kkk
but during the egyptian/turkish rule of the coastal north they made local sultans to cooperate with them
so when the british and the french arrived these sultans were in charge of the coastal area.

Monsoons, Somalis had knowledge of them, were key in the Indian OCEAN trade and built their own unique boat.sahal80 wrote:somalis had some anti-sea culture, looked down to the fish and sea jobs
