I was in the car taking my aunt somewhere and I put on some drill rap (not gonna listen to any of that whiteboy music they play on the radio) and she said "why are you acting like these mathows?". I told her I am black and she said "wallahi these kids don't know their daqan?". Anywho, why does it seem that so many somalis deny that they're black? And it seems like these somalis that deny they're black only say they're black when they're victimized.

We Somalis reject "black" as an identity. Because black is a western identity trap, that renders you alienated without any framework for social development. What sense is it to confine ourself to a name that only reflects our skin color.

Just because we share skin color with AAs or other Africans doesn't mean we have the same values, cultures or live in the same reality as them. This doesn't mean we see ourselves as surperior, it just means we see ourselves as distinct.

So i agree with your Aunt. She is very much correct you are Somali not black. Black is an empty color abstract with no refrence attached to it, while your Somaliness on the other hand connects you to land, culture and history.

Lastly we understand the reality of discrimination and racism in the west, it's just not our identity. Racism and discrimination does not describe us. Ask yourself if the only difference is skin complexion and being at the bottom of every social economic indicator. Then how is that an identity?

There is no wonder why Somalis feel a sense of inadequaucy when it comes to the super-imposition of blackness. Because it takes them away from their claim to land, culture and history and renders them into homeless marginalized "other" with no refrence.

Now ask yourself, how does my "somaliNess" connect myself to my land, culture, or history? Because as far I don't give a shit about the corrupt land known as Somalia and I hope the famine allah bestowed upon them extincts that corrupt country, I have no somali country, and all the somali history I know and care about is they destroyed their own country. I'm not necessarily a negro, per say. I'm black. And I happen to be from Somalia. It's just that simple. And for the food, I never had somali food growing up because it tasted like shit so I just ate sandwiches, cereal, etc. And for the language, I just was never interested in learning it. Like for example, when I hear my pops and my mom talking in somali, I know what they're talking about but I can't just respond to them in somali. Plus, what is learning somali gonna do for your life? You see any prestigious jobs saying "You must be fluent in the somali language"?
