It is true I agree with Ciyaal. After we left dugsi, we had private lessons at home by Garre teacher and he told us from the beginning our tajweed was horrible. We don't speak Arabic but he taught us the correct tajweed to the point when the only one of us with good recitation voice (the rest of us suck ) recites in public, his tajweed is always mentioned as near-perfect. I myself have been told my pronunciation of Arabic is sometimes more flawless than a native speaker by Arabic class teacher and I give all credit to the repitation and forced learning of tajweed by the former macalin. I agree with Ciyaal you can learn tajweed without speaking Arabic if your teacher knows the rules and I find Arabic is a unique language where you can learn to speak perfectly without even know the language.
