What is the idea of taking names?

Postby Sir-Luggoyo » Sun Jun 17, 2007 12:27 pm

I am talking about cultures that dictate women should take their hubby's last name. Why can't she retain her name, her identity, that is basically who she is.

I guess because they live in Patriarchal socities in which fathers is the figure head of the family and bigger responsibility.
The same way the children takes allegiance to the father's clan rather than mother's clan in our culture

As opposed to the wonderfully egalitarian cultures, who mandate the following treatment for those women impertinent as to venture outdoors without the express consent of their paterfamilias?

That's self-evident and it changes nothing. Unless of course you want to fall back on the classic contention it's a Zionist-Crusader conspiracy.

"no the problem exist , not deny here but the video is not a way to proof"

If photographic and video testimonials of a battered woman at the hands of an Islamist imbecile isn't sufficient a proof, then we might as well end our exchange here.

Your poor grasp of English betrays your foreign nature. An Islamofascist sympathiser in all likelihood if not one himself.

Poetess,

Maybe someone asked you this question b4, but Why are you so angry? Why are you so bitter about Islam? What is this unreserved animosity towards Islam?

Sir-Luggoyo kindred, so damned foolish a concept as hate is wholly alien to my nature. I'm an all-loving conservative gal with not a virulent bone in my body.

That notwithstanding, we're engaged in a cataclysmic struggle for civilization against towelheads of the death-to-the-Great-Satan crowd. Nothing but a firm insistence on our part that we have a better religion, culture and code of life is going to win this war.

Hey Poetess..you can't base your view of Islam entirely on those savages...that's just wrong. Its a beautiful religion..unfortunately many are using its name for "ideals" they deem fit.

Its partly connected to bible, pre-historic christianity and part to the English/spanish culture. The former has more to do with Adam having precedence over Eve, (who is perceived' inferior to Adam,) and the latter is more of Monetary reasons.I mean,Culturely, for the English and Spanish- women were never allowed to inherit properties, therefore -the closest male kin will inherit the property of a deceased kinship; thus the emphasis of adapting the husband name to secure legal grounds. Rolling Eyes In Today's world --the 'name adaptation' has absolutely no practical bearing or relavance.(ok maybe a little relavance; it has a sentimental bearing value. Its the ultimate way of pleasing the ego of a man who is gullable enuf to believe he is in charge of her.The feminist has the last laugh. She inherits half of his wealth when she decides to divorce him)That is why Sir lug u are finding it odd that it is still practiced; but i must admit, why u find it odd is the most interestin factor here? It's puzzling yet somehow -- 'telling'. Laughing Laughing Laughing
