Paidmonk,

In Turkey the lingering menace is the army simply stepping in and overruling popular will, as they have done previously. But what I hope is total new Turkish party coming into being that isn't ethno-nationalist or ethno-religious but one that is committed to broadening democracy within Turkey for all its peoples.

Again, that is a dream, one that every Turk has and knows is NOT a reality, in the near future.

The only thing that can change the military rule is a military overthrow, similar to Ataturk's, or rather reversing Ataturk's rule.

Turkey is 80 years into what I see as a system much like the Russian Kremlin, which has been around since the times of Ivan the Terrible (don't be fooled that it was created during Lenin's days). 80 years is too long for the Turkish people, and at this point, I think it is almost permanent. If Ataturk's rule is not changed within the next quarter-century, Turkey is going down the secular path at full-speed and what we're seeing today is not even an outwards extremist secularism, wait until they start spreading their ideas throughout the region.

paidmonk the secualr extremists are losing the war, they do not control the economy anymore,
most of the businesses and big corporations are owned by supporters of Gul.

all they have is the army,

and all that it will take to destroy the armies political power is to slowly remove the anti-islamic rules and policies in the army.

for example you cannot get into millitary college to become an offcier if yu studied religion in high school, and even if you do make it as an officer, you will never be promoted if you are seen to be praying daily and not drinking.

stop those policies, step by step and withing 20-30 years you will have muslims in the army hierarchy.
