I would rather deal with the West than China but it is worth a try. like Gurey said the Chinese first came to Somalia in the 15th century taking back giraffes, ivory, frankicense, etc to their King and ever since then we have been friends. China practically developed whatever little development our country got

also it is always good for the market (africa) when there are more two or more competitors, if chinese gets stronger, the west will have someone to deal with if they keep tryin to fock up africa

one more thing, during the 77 war, while our allies the arabs hesitated,
the US hesitated to send us help, the chinese quickly sent ammunition and medical supplies,
without bieng asked.

I am from the same clan as president Barre and I grew up knowing every intrigue that existed in Somalia but this is a first hearing support from China. China was just gettin done with its "cultural revolution" and was hardly able to send us anything, infact China would be repulsed by little Vietnam couple in 1978 and it was then China really started develop militarily.

The Egyptians, Saudis, and Syrians provided the bulk of our support, if not physical, in money and military armaments, egyptians gave us jet fighters and spares, saudis money and tanks, and syrians as everyone knows flew sorries with us deep into ethiopia.

china was invloved in construction projects within somalia, the benadir hospital that i was born in,
several highways and road imporvments.

China manufactures the same weapon systems that the soveits provided to us,
thats why they were able to send some aid.

the arabs , Saudia and other GCC states supplied monetary aid, egypt supplied most of the equipment, but china repsonded quiker than all of them.
