Book Talk

Postby garowegal » Tue Jan 08, 2008 3:08 pm

I thought it would be cool to have a thread about what books (if any ) we are reading right now. My motivation is purely selfish:D I am always looking for more good books to read and I thought others are too.

I am a person who reads more than one book at once, so right now I am reading 3.

I am Reading a book called "My sisters Keeper" It as about a 13 yr old girl who was conceived so that she could be a perfect match for bone marrrow donation for her older sister who has leukemia, and who sues her parents for medical emancipation to stop being forced to donate stuff for her sister.

I am also re-reading " The Minaret" By leila Aboulela its about a Girl Named Najwa.... and Aboulela presents to us simultaneously the two worlds of Najwa, one where she was a teenager and one where she is a mature woman in her mid thirties. Najwa is born in a very rich family in Khartoum, her father is a politician. She studies Business and Economics at university, she has no interest in these subjects but she is studying just because rich people's kids have to go to uni... She tries hard though, but she has no major ambitions in life. She has her own set of friends, finds a boyfriend at uni, a communist political activist at her uni, goes to clubs, enjoys everything life has to offer, her life is just a bed of roses.. Her life revolves around pop music, western clothes, fashion and parties.
But this same Najwa now wears a hijab, attends Islamic lectures and is looking for a job as a maid. To know why this happens and how she ends up in London, you've got to read the book and trust me you wont regret it.

I am also plodding through "Wealth of Nations" because it's a book I've always wanted to read. It's slow going I must admit, and people always ask me if I am an economist
