During the ICU, Shabaab was a military wing of the ICU lead by Adan Hashi Ceyrow. When the war broke out and the ICU was destroyed, two groups formed the Asmara faction and Al-Shabaab. Shabaab denounced the Asmara faction because it let secularists like Hussein Aideed join, and they only want to rule by Sharia Law.
