Many years ago I met one sweet Somali girl in Europe. She was a happy girl and good looking too. She had a white boyfriend who was seriously falling in love. He wanted to go to bed with her after a year or so. She kept denying him and he was unable to understand because he really loved her. The poor girl came to me one day to ask me to explain to the boy, since she understood the practice of cirumcison was common in Ethiopia too. She seemed dejected and at six's and sevens as to how she could explain to him, that if she went to bed with him, then that would be the end of her if and when she goes back home to her family. Then she would be considered an outcast and they would not touch her with a ten foot pole. It was a terrible dilemma and the poor girl was utterly depressed. After I explained the case to her boyfriend, he was understanding and helped her get surgical help. After surgery the girl seemed to loose her self esteem day by day, obviously thinking of her family, whom she probably never again will see.

This goes to show that just because a woman has her genitals mutilated doesn't mean she's a virgin. Most of the prostitutes in Egypt have FGM done to them. This backward practice needs to stop and my heart goes out to all women who've had this done to them.
