It is typical Somali geographical (savannah/semi-arid) landscape...the same way it is now. The problem with parent's "recollections" is that sometimes it is riddled with emotion and sentimentality which can distort the viewpoint to
how the parent would have like the place to be. In this case that would the polar opposite of anything in Somalia today...so since we are at war, they would like their memory to be of peace, if there is hunger they would like it to be of times of good harvest, etc.
This is why it is better to analyze the psychology of the individual and the psychological aspects of whatever is being discussed. Sometimes the truth lies in that analyzes then the actual things said.
