Now, this is where I draw the line. That verse is probably one of the most misinterpreted verses in the Qur'an. It only applies to if the woman fails to obey the husband regarding her Islamic duties e.g. if she refuses to pray or cover. This is a last resort, first you must talk to her, then scold her, leave her bed, etc. then lastly you strike her. The Prophet (saw) was asked "Strike her with what?" He responded "With a Siwak and only on her hands & feet." What is a Siwak? Cadey Soomaali and only gently. It doesn't say to beat the poor woman in the sense we know it as.

I agree with the following points:-
" The wife is not his merchandise, he can not do whatever he wants to her"
"Even if the wife forgives the husband, it does not mean that Allah (swt) will forgive him on the Day of Judgment" (That's if he strikes her in the face, or causes her considerable injury thus violating the Law set down by Allah (swt)
As I understand it striking the wife is a LAST resort, he must talk to her first, then refuse to share the bed with her etc. The sheikh also mentioned that he cannot bruise her or strike her in the face. Anyhow, it is a very sensitive subject and not something to be joked about. Great care should be taken, Insha-Allah.
