Four months is the maximum allowed to be away from one's wife. Its one of the conditions a woman can seek khulaa. People choose to ignore whatever parts of the religion they want, sadly.

WOW, poor man..his life as he knows it has crumbled in too pieces right in front of his eyes. What I don't understand is how good people end up with bad people, it just seems unfair.

Most of these men promise them to come as often as possible but in realty that never happens.How do they expect that a humanbeing with feelings wait for them a whole year.Thats cruel, only a strong woman with imaan and values can wait for such man.

From memory, its 4 months. Allahu Aclam. After that he has to visit or arrange for them to be together. If he refuses, she can seek a divorce through a judge, its one of her rights in the Shari'ah.
