Question; Does anyone know Why do many settlements around central Somalia, particularly M/Shabelle and Galgaduud, have towns named Ceelmacaan, Ceel baraf, Ceeldheer, Ceelqooxle, Ceelbuur etc?

Ceel Baraf  Is there ice or snow there?

Salaam
p.s. I don't know really. But Shirib's answer seems plausible.

Ceel means a water well and those towns were built around water wells. We have ceelgaduud, ceel cadde, ceelwaaq etc. in Gedo. There is also ceel macaan in Shabelle.......Water Wells are very important to Nomads so they name wells something appropriate and in time, the land surrounding the wells becomes a village, then a town and eventually a city.

I don't think there is a huge advtanage to having water wells near your residence. Nomads fight over water wells a lot.

How are u supposed to survive with out a water well? U need a water well or u die, the reason they fight over those water wells is cause they are so important
