Question: To what extent would you say Islam allows us to practise freedom of speech and do you believe we are confined to our teachings or is their an element of scriptual flexiblity?
That extent is when Allah would command us muslims to do certain things, basically the things that are "must" and not sunnah....

Lol Amat (the undercover ciyaal suuqad Razz ), good job sis Wink . We need you more than the generals nayaa Mad .

Anyway first I wanna say masha allah to Chilli, my god have you ever thought of becoming a writer? Shocked And nayaa you wrote almost half of what I wanted to write damnit. Hope you break all your fingers Evil or Very Mad . Okay, istaqfirulaah lol Embarassed .

Back to the topic..

"To what extent would you say Islam allows us to practise freedom of speech?"

Well I think Islam allows us to practise freedom of speech to a GREAT extent. Laakin ofcourse there are boundaries, one must abide by the rules of the qur'an when practicing freedom of speech. Hadalka ma la iska tuuro you know, be more informed about something before you just throw it out in public. For example when people like Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Salman Rushdie (ilaahay naar ha ku shido ee) mock and insult our religion (or any other religion for that matter) it's a blasphemy and it can no longer be called "freedom of speech" Exclamation Ofcourse there are alot of misconceptions/misunderstandings about Islam, but normal people talk about it in a civilized way and try to come to an understanding. I've read in a book that a certain Umar ibn Abd' al-Aziz used to say: "It would not please me more if the Companions of Muhammad (pbuh) did not differ among them, because had they not differed there would be no leeway (for us)." We're only human beings and make billions of mistakes every day therefore we need to DISCUSS everything that's misunderstood. We can "grow for the better" then, like Chilli said. I don't think there is absolute freedom of speech in Islam though and there never will be in any religion or any country in this world. If there was, then a similar war like in that movie "War of the Worlds" would be going on every year lol. But when you look at the Muslim Ummah today, it's not as strong as it used to be. Obviously because it's being attacked from every angle due to September 11th. Muslims should be coming together and unite now more than ever. PLUS alot of arab countries have become pets of America and other Western countries, they're making way for the kufaars to slowly destroy muslims. Aslong as this continues and more muslim countries do this, there'll be nothing left of our beautiful religion Mad . Hopefully it won't come to that.
Allah (swt) said in surah At-Tawbah (verse 9: 71): "And the believers, men and women, are protecting friends one of another; they enjoin the right and forbid the wrong, and they establish worship and they pay the poor-due, and they obey Allah and His messenger. As for these, Allah will have mercy on them. Lo! Allah is Mighty, Wise."

As for question number 2: "Are we confined to our teachings or is there an element of flexibility?"

Well definitely confined to our teachings. There can't be any flexibility in the Qur'an and Sunnah like the Christians do with the Bible. Nothing can be changed in our Holy Qur'an. But Chilli said the rest already about when there's a misinterpretation and what we should do in that case. Nayaa you stole half of my essay Evil or Very Mad .

Okay I don't know what I wrote right now, I'm dizzy and my fingers are numb lol. Enjoy!

May Allah (swt) bless us and guide us in our efforts in His way! *Aamiin*

So uhm Amat, who won nayaa (moi the greatest writer ever or chilli)? Very Happy

Lol ma'shallah didn't know i was competing dee...but i cut it short n am gone say ur the better writter... rose

i like what you said about boundaries of freedom of speech. just like concept of freedom, no human socity can be free in the absolute sense of the word, there must be some limitations of some sort or another, if the society is to function at all....we can't just follow our desires and fall into the well of sin..there are certain supreme principles n laws designed for us and u could say control our nature.

hey dutch gal wat u think of the freedom of speech in Holland and how Muslims are against it and the dutch believe that they are threats to their mentality of freedom?

Mashallah well said sis. So when you talk about Ijtihad(critical thinking), would you say this enables us to practise free interpration, and dont you think this could be uses as a weapon by many sects to counter argue certain aspects of a particular ayah? (sorry to change the subject)

Fiesty ala waa tii, nayaa sheer ap ciyal sugh kulaha.... Laughing
Hey mashallah well said again, i was afraid Chilli covered everything, but mashallah you mentioned something really important. When you talk about questioning and that there are limitations especially when Allah(swt) has made something lawful or unlawful, although its imperitaive to our system of beliefs to have firm boundaries. Would u say this is a has negative facets and thats why Islam is always at the pulpit of critisism?
