A 1903 Somali chant

Ok... after .....an "after-thought"....i manage to come back and grade the poem. I give it a solid A-. It would have been an A plus had not the contents or sentiment of the poem annoyed me for about 33 seconds. But to be fair,as far as the creativity and prose of the poem is concerned, it is brilliant. An Absolute magnificent work. But too bad that the truth that somali woman foe is a slave industry, was included in the content.

After careful re-reading i am inclined to believe Grant, that this was written by a white man. Although, i DO NOT agree it was written for a fellow white man. So Yippie, for not agreeing with the octogenarian 100%!

This quote is clearly written by a white man or any other man who has been ruled by a master of a king.(in this case, lets stick with the white man theory, i can't imagine an adoon who has been 'mastered' writing this spectacular prose). I am inclined to believe a white man who has travelled to somalia.

A somali camel man with : "wrapped from head to foot in my snow-white or jungle coloured
tobe" .....does not have a point of reference to a king or a master. But an English man has. In a way, this writer is reporting an admiration of the freedom of the somali man. In a way, the british is saying- a somali man is free-er than a subject of the royal king.



But lets not kid ourselves here.It all could be written by a grandiose-self faanis-isaaq man who is first in contact with the 'civilized subjects of the british royalness" of course.Words like "look & majestic" shows extreme self love, which a somali is reputed to have! Again, The effusive Faaniss word usage in the poem hints a proud camel farah, guessingly--an isaaq sarvant or servant who in ebulient mood of euphoria was spewing superiority, chauvinism & somali nationality!. (apologies to my qabil omen)

I simply cannot believe there was ever an afSomali version of that drivel. It was printed in an American paper in 1903. How could it have been intended for anybody other than Cadaans? That is a white man's view of what the Somali men were gettig away with. Darned envious if you ask me.

The plan of the new campaign for the suppression of the Mohammedan tribes of Somaliland that are in revolt, under the "Mad Mullah" against British authority is similar to that which failed last year. The base of the operations is Obbia in Italian Somaliland. The first campaign failed in consequence of insufficent transport facilities. The British forces in command of General Egerton, will be aided by those of Abyssinia. Large bodies of King Menelek's troops are to hold the wells of Galadi and Mudug.

Naturally, considerable uncertainity exists as to the Mullah's plan of operations. He has been moving from point to point in the enterior and, if reports are trustworthy, committing depredations in various localities.

The discovery that supplies of arms and ammunition has gone from an English exporter to be sold for use by the Mullah against the British and Abyssinian soldoery created considerable indignation in England some time since.

The "preposterous conceit" of the Somali natives shown by the translation of a song or chant which has been published in an English paper. It runs as follow:

It's the same sort of propaganda the British used in WWI, when they didn't change the German word "kadaver" when referring to what the Germans were eating.
