Fah I gotta agree with Cinque on this. You are born into a Somali-speaking family, how could others have more of a personal connection? You are showing a defeatist attitude in this thread and you must likely won't learn Somali not because you can't because you don't want to judging all the self-imposed barriers you put up. the only time i even remotely start learning is when my ayeeyos are here but they're in ohio now

my parents never been strict with it, i urged them many times to... but after a week its not upheld... my mom speaks somali about 85% of the time to us atleast

and yeah theres some somalis in my area but we all speak english... the evironment is not conducive for learning somali though


i dunno, sure its excuses but i've tried man... i've gotten better than I used to be say 3-4 years ago... I atleast have a clue about somali issues now (unlike my younger brothers who dont know a damn thing...and i mean nothing).. i can perfectly understand af somali

my issue is mainly speaking coherently and being original with speaking,... thats been my issue for a while...im glad to say i can atleast read somali too just cant comprehend it fully

I understand where ur coming from bro. The answer lies in practising as much as u can. Read a lot of Somali texts, so u acquire a good grasp of Somali grammar and vocabulary. Listen to online interviews, preferably Somalis with Mudug accent, bc all other Somali accents are creolized versions of the real Lang.

Speaking will come, but u have to stop being afraid of the responses.

ES, I agree completely, there is no excuse, when I was 15-16, I didn't speak much somali, I had to basically teach myself as well, and it paid off, today, waxan ugu hadlaa soomaaliga anigu hadaa ka imatay Gedo.

Man love my little niece, when we reply to her in english she says "af somali nagula hadal" now that is something to be proud of.
