Because at the UN you speak 1 of 5/6 languages, English, French, Spanish, Chinese or Arabic. ( & I think Russian)

The funny thing is Somali accent in Arabic is more respected by Arabs than their own regional dialect accents because Somalis speak pure fusxa Arabic when they learn it. This Syrian kid was telling me this when he was explaining why Somali kids win the annual Quranic recitations year after year.

Compare Qaddafi's maghreb Arabic to Sharif's and Sharif seems like the one who was born speaking Arabic.

It's called "Fusxa" or Classical Arabic. It is also the standard Arabic of media and education. However you would look elitist and out of place if you tried to converse in the Arab streets

Arabic is actually a very powerful language and among the official languages at the United Nations. Nothing is wrong with it if he chose to speak Arabic. It's actually a plus.

The Somali translator at the UN Great Hall called in sick that day  . When Hon. Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed addressed the UN General Assembly he used English. Arabic and English are part of the official languages of the U.N. There is nothing wrong with using one of those languages.
