The Canadian Press An Islamic militant group is reporting that a Somali-Canadian man, who went missing two years ago, has been killed in Somalia.
The death of Mohammed Elmi Ibrahim was reported in a short video posted on a jihadist website and found by SITE Intelligence Group, a U.S.-based group that monitors Islamic militant messages online.
The two-minute video shows Ibrahim in Saudi Arabia explaining the historical significance of the location where the video was shot.
A message accompanying the video tells Canadian youth that Ibrahim “succeeded,” saying they should “rejoice in the news of your dear brother and follow his footsteps.”
A source close to the family tells The Canadian Press that the man on the video is Ibrahim, a University of Toronto student who had also attended the Abu Haraina mosque.
The Department of Foreign Affairs in Ottawa said Wednesday that they were aware of the reports but could not confirm Ibrahim’s death.
Ottawa banned Somali-based group Al-Shabaab as a terrorist organization earlier this month, saying it was trying to radicalize and recruit young Canadians.
Five Muslim men who attended the Abu Haraina mosque in Toronto went missing last fall, and are believed to have joined Al-Shabaab.
The terrorist organization, banned in many Western countries, is the most active group targeting Somalia’s impotent transitional government.
Meanwhile, the FBI is investigating the disappearance of about 20 young Somali men who left Minneapolis over the last two years for Somalia, presumably to join Al-Shabaab.
