the reason behind 1991 somalia

Postby Nomand » Sat Mar 20, 2010 4:46 pm

in 1969 coup d'etat led by siad barre happend shortly after scientific socialism was announced and the country led by Somali Revolutionary Socialist Party a one party state. in 1977 the ogaden war broke out which led to the end of somalias communism, however the west was not so keen on supporting somalia like the soviets did. which led to the decline of somalia, now comes to intresting part the soviet union collapsed in 1991 the same year somalia collapsed now what was the reason for its collapse well to put it simple the west who by then were supporting somalia had no further use for them.

this had a big consequence it ment that the state could not afford to pay its police force or its broken military.

Yes Nomad you are right the reason behind the somali disaster in 1991 was the ogaden defeat in 1978.

I would like to talk to you about that war.

A somali source about ogaden war.

The Russians, who by now knew that the Americans would not interfere, sent a message to Siad Barre through the Libyan leader Gadafi to warn him of disastrous results for his forces if they did not immediately withdrew from the areas they occupied. Because of the superior military built up by the Russians and Cubans against the Somali forces, they had no alternative but to retreat to the Somali boundary line. The Russians opened a path for retreat and did not allow the Ethiopian armies to pursue them
