No rebel group defeated the Somali National Army (SNA). It was actually dismantled by the lack of funding that it faced after all of the economic aid was at one point cut off by the Europeans, USA, and Arab League countries. The SNA and Somali government was overthrown by foreign countries. While The government could not have paid its employees and the state inistitutions were collabsing, USA and others were actually increasing their aid to the rebel groups, particularly USC. That is a known fact where the last American Ambassador has publicly admitted that it was the USA and European countries that have overthrown the last standing Somali government.
SNM put up fierce fights but eventually SNA drove SNM fighters out of the cities. Actually, General Abdul-Aziz Ali Bare remained in the North since April 1991 even tough the USC conquered Mogadishu in Jan. 1991. The General and the rest of the soldiers left the North in April 1991 and went to the central and Southern Somalia. So knowing the history and the truth does help if we are reviewing those facts that occurred in the past.
It is true that SLers established government despite the renewed civil war in 1995 and after the war ended, peace and stability continued. However, one should also understand that SL does not face the amount of foreign interference that South and Central Somalia faced and still faces. In my view, the peace and stability in Southern Somalia was denied by foreign countries and Somalis have became the tool that is used for their own destruction.
It should also be noted that SL and its supporters spend so much time and energy to gain international recognition. Imagine if SL spent all of that time and energy to reconcile other Somali problems and tried to act as the legitimate Somali government. I think some of the Somali issues may have been resolved and we would have had a Somali government standing somewhere. In my view, it would have been a possibility and it is a chance that SL leaders never pursued.
