It is with sad regret, to inform those of you, who are not aware already, that Twisted Logic and Air Canada have been banned from this site.
Recently, as many of you have, I have observed a growing tide of intolerance and censorship on somalinet. The internet is a democratic forum for self-expression, a right that should be safeguarded against those who seek to silence diverse and plural opinions. One of the major attributes that makes Somalinet a premier site for Somalis to gather, discuss and debate ideas is that - freedom of expression, no matter how polemic or differing has always been considered a sacred value, appreciated by forum members its in entirety and indeed, at most times tolerated by MODs.
This recent attempt to reverse the many years of progress is a worrying prospect and can be demonstrated by the unexpected removal of Twisted Logic and Air Canada. I have also been observing the MODs indifference towards some individuals on this forum to get away with abusing the rules and at the same time allowing many threads to remain - which have long ago passed the threshold of any reasonable standards of common decency and mutual respect.
We should be able to debate without any intimidation or coercion to conform to one set standard of values. We are all different and people’s individual’s views should be respected and at the same time a mutual respect should be accorded to all individuals who respond to any such topics. However, if there is an abuse of power, especially, in cases where it’s not balanced, those with power should be able to exercise their discretion with good judgement and make rational choices that are in the best interests of all forum members.
Banning people should always be a last resort, it draconian and shows that a conflict or any issues pertaining cannot be resolved in a manner which is reasonable. This is something, which has in recent times plagued us Somalis.
Admin and MODs, I am pleading with you all to show restraint and compassion for all our cordial somaliness and to give regard and indeed an important platform at all times, to the spirit of democratic expression and freedom of speech.
