^^ Its still an innovation as the Prophet (saw) made it clear that the Muslims only have 2 days to celebrate which is the two Eid's, including the weekly Eid i.e Friday.

So

Isnt it traced back to the White settlers giving thanks to the Indians-- the host--whom they later massacred? It is a none religious holiday. Modern day today, it only means --a commercial holiday where families gather to catch up---and yeah---like Fah buurtoy says---to eat.

There is a legitimate scholarly difference of opinion on this matter.

http://www.islamonline.net/servlet/Sate ... 9503543368
http://www.suhaibwebb.com/islam-studies ... this-week/

Summary:

1- If holiday is religious in nature (Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Diwali) - there is no difference on opinion that celebrating this is prohibited. I got an invited to a Diwali event on campus by Hindi friends, I had to decline.
2- If holiday is not religious in nature (Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Birthdays, Mothers Day) - The scholars differ on this matter. Especially if you have lots of non-Muslim family, the opinion that it is ok might be a better opinion as Sheikh Suhaib mentioned due to bringing together between family, community, etc. Otherwise, if there is no benefit, it is best to avoid these holidays. This is also the opinion of Dr. Waleed Basyouni and Sheikh Salah As-Sawi (with some conditions):

I'm Somali, sure. But being American is not an ethnic identifier. The whole world has its people living in America.

Being WHITE is not the litimus test for being American. The White people immigrated here and stole the land from the Native American tribes.

If you're born here, you are American. PERIOD.

This isn't Europe where the white people ARE the natives and you are living in their land, so to speak
