Somalis backhome need to learn basic Artisinal Gold Mining

Postby udun » Fri Dec 10, 2010 6:40 pm

Somalia is rated one of the countries in Africa that contains huge deposits of gold. Preliminary explorations have shown huge abundance of gold deposits in these regions of Somalia:

1. Bay
2. Bakool
3. Sool
4. Sanaag
5. Bari
6. Awdal
7. Gedo
8. Hiiraan.

European geologists have found an entire green-gold belt in one of the largest mountains in Somalia. Due to the inconsistent and recurring draughts, both nomadic and farming communities need to be taught how to safely do basic gold and precious gemstone mining. A proper export mechanism should also be developed where Somali miners can sell their mineral finds in world markets. These excavations of resources should also be properly managed where the mining does not really devastate the natural habitat. Mercury and other chemicals should be banned and never used as means to separate the gold from other ingredients of sand, rock, and minerals.

No thank you .. I don't want Somalia to be exploited similar to what took place in Nigeria
.. corruption is not the way to go.

Somalia should wait for peace and stability
then build up the country by taking advantage of the primary sector
Exporting fish .. etc ..

I agree. But the Somalis that govern Somalia (TFG,Somaliland,Puntland) only care about money. Thats why the PL and the SL goverment wants to drill oil while their people are starving

Peace, stability, and having daily livelihoods go together. Imagine when draughts occur and many families lost their livestock or when the farmers could not farm due to the lack of rain, what do the young men in these comunities do? They go to cities, they setup checkpoints, they invlove in khat trades, and as a result civil conflicts occur due to checkpoints, extortions, khat trades, and other despair that come with the lack of proper livelihood.

Peace and stability yes but people also have to be able to put food on the table.

Patience and faith in Allah will solve their issues.
They need to learn how to farm, fishing and how to preserve water.

Basic stuff they need to start from the bottom upwards.
Remember most of these people waa reer baadiye . fahamtey?

NewHargisaG,

Yes, great to be American but remember we all live in a small world that is interconnected where each one's despair is felt any where else in the world. Imagine why we have huge migrations in this world, so many wars, so much hate. If you look at the root cause of these problems, you will know that it is due to lack of enough resources and despair that exists many places in the world. So you should care your fellow Somalis backhome.

MzBautiful, when was the last time you were in Somalia? The biggest problem is due to lack of rain and not enough water. Some Somali nomads and farmers setup smaller water holes that can keep the water when rain falls down but what was happening was there was no rain sometimes for 2 consecutive years. We can be philisophical but reality is different and you should see the despair backhome. It needs proper management but every thing have to wait for a government that we don't know when it is going to come when we are loosing people is non-starter in my view. Yes, we need a government but people have to live on the environment and just like farming, fish, and livestock, minerals are also part of the environment and people should also take advantage of it. Remember, what we are discussing is artisinal mining.

Somalia seems to be the land of abundant mystical resources, like oil and now gold, that never seem to materialize outside the fantastical minds of a few forum members.

I heard there some huge untapped reserves of unobtainium in mudug.....

Yes, Udun, but this can create more wars and killings without safety and security measures in place.

Do you remember that banana war?

Walaashiis,

I have read it on web. I do understand that it could create wars but the way of life for the people of Somalia should be diversified. That is all I am saying and we should take advantage of the abundant natural resources in Somalia.

I think the banana war took place sometime in mid-nintees.

yes, you are right on this, but I still believe that we should not touch this kind of resourse before Somalia establishes a strong government.
