What areas do ONLF control?

Postby James Dahl » Fri Jan 07, 2011 8:43 pm

I would like to add ONLF territories to my map here:

Information about what lands the ONLF control is sketchy though, ONLF announces if they capture towns but there is no way of knowing if they hold onto them or what towns they had beforehand, so I am turning to you for help.

Also, do you know if al-Shabaab controls any territory in NFD?

The rural areas belong to them, the ethiopian army is confined to couple of major towns and only in the day time. There is a saying among the people of Ogadenia.."The towns belong to the tigree in the daytime, and ONLF at night".

SO to answer your quetion, the onlf accupy 80% of the heartland while ethiopia is control of several major towns.

I've heard that too but few details beyond that.

I've drawn up a quick map, which towns on this map do ONLF control?

There's no specific City/Town ONLF physically controls, they at this moment operate as Guerrilla force focusing attacks on Ethiopian Garrison outpost's and army bases. The majority of the population live outside of urban settlements, they fail to attract any strategic value save a few larger centre's furthermore its very dangerous for the population Ethiopia will no hesitate in carpet bombing any ONLF controlled City/Town.Its more favourable for them to attack the defence infrastructure of Ethiopia. When possible ONLF forces do flex there muscles and enter settlement's leaving when they have reached there objectives, there land is the country side besides the nomad population whom they have armed to defend.Ethiopia is at a huge disadvantage in the country-side so they have stuck to defending urban settlements and soon when ONLF finally have the fire-power and the Political situation is suitable there will be huge steps to push Ethiopia out of the Ogaden via the capture of territory, that is where the trajectory of the conflict is heading. The fact is ONLF has as much of a say as Ethiopia in the day-day running of the Ogaden region.

Instead of coloring a specific territory for ONLF, what you can do is mark area of operations which is from Shinile/Dire Dawa to Afdher region.Liben region has not gained much attention from ONLF.
