Islamic Republic of Iran's Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari has announced that an Iranian naval delegation will be visiting Djibouti.
“In this three-day trip we will hold talks with Djibouti's Chief of General Staff [Fathi Ahmed Houssein] and Navy Commander [Admiral Abdurrahman Aden Cher] in addition to visiting their military and naval bases,” Sayyari said at a Saturday press conference.
The Iranian commander added that several military Memoranda of Understanding would also be signed between Iran and Djibouti.
“The commanders of the Djiboutian Navy visited our Navy during their trip to our country in 2008, and called for the expansion of cooperation in all fields especially in training students, organizing and construction as well as equipment,” Mehr News Agency quoted Sayyari as saying.
Referring to the ominous phenomena of piracy in the Gulf of Aden, Sayyari said the United Nations called for the help of the countries capable of maintain a presence in the region.
“We immediately dispatched our first warships to the Gulf of Aden to protect oil and commercial ships,” Sayyari said, adding that Iran's Navy has escorted more than 1,000 ships.
He also said regional countries are capable of providing regional security and there is no need for the presence of trans-regional forces.
In December 2010, Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps Navy General Ali-Reza Nasseri visited Qatar and held talks with the Qatari Armed Forces Chief of Staff Major General Hamad bin Ali al-Attiyah.
