Mogadishu's Main Market Ordered Closed





Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government (TFG) has suspended business operations in Mogadishu’s main market for security reasons, authorities said on Sunday.

Mohamud Ahmed Nur Tarsan, the Governor of Banadir region told reporters in Mogadishu that the Bakara market would remain closed for three days starting Monday to pave way for the local authorities to carry out clean up operations and tighten security in the area.

Normal business will resume on Thursday, he said.

During the three-day closure, the authorities said nobody will be allowed into premises within the compound, adding that anyone who defied the order risked being arrested.

“This means that there will be no one coming to the market for shopping as shops will remain closed for three days,” Tarsan said.

Tarsan said the move aimed at beefing up security and improving the safety of people’s property in the market.

According to the governor, the decision was reached at when leaders from the TFG met with local officials to discuss the issues affecting business in the market.

The two sides, he said, had mutually agreed to suspend business activities at the market for three days beginning Monday before normal business could resume on Thursday.

The governor said that his government planned to carry out security checks in areas that had been vacated by the militant group al-Shabaab. The security operation would be extended to all parts of the city which had been in the hands of the militant group before they were forced out by government soldiers backed by AMISOM troops.

“We are putting up the administrative structures of the districts and will open police stations all around the city to ensure tight security,” he said.

He pointed out that the authorities were committed to the fight against the Islamist al-Shabaab, terming them ‘the enemy in the city.’

The withdrawal of the al-Shabaab group from key bases in Mogadishu has ushered in a new dawn to the Somali capital bringing forth a single administration for the first time since the Ethiopian intervention that ousted Somalia’s Islamic courts Union in 2007.

No actually. Al shabab is more divided then ever. Al shabab publicly declared yesterday that they left the city. But a miniority al shabab seniors and soldiers stayed behind and refused listening to orders. they are stationed ONLY in 2 districts. Daynille and another one (i forgot). Abdiweli and the Amisom/TFG coalition has given them 24 hours to surrender and not be harmed, or else face the consquences. The rest of the city is in the TFG hands.
