Is Somalinet some kind of cult?

Postby blackstars25 » Tue May 01, 2012 6:57 am

Most regulars on this site are long standing members and everyone seems to know each other. Annoyingly, many topics are highly personalised and people just generally are very unwelcoming to new members or they just assume your an alt. Pretty depressing considering this site is 12 years + and still a small community. I think this site has great potential as a platform for dialogue and lively debate among the Somali diaspora but I believe there is something intrinsic about this community that hinders this process. I think there is a need for some structural changes that need to made in the style and management of this site.

I would like to suggest this site be more open to non-Somali members. I've seen a few Ethiopians, whites come here and they've been grilled and called every name under the sun, which was very pathetic imo. I used to frequent PDF (Pakistan Defence Forum) and the diversity there is amazing, Indians, Chinese, Iranians, Arabs, Russians, Turks, a couple Africans you name it, which makes the place very lively and interesting. I don't see why Somalinet can't be like that, unless this is some kind of cult?

Of course, I don't expect to be taken seriously. I just came yesterday, what do I know right? But there's my two cents anyway.

There are many non-Somali members on this site, some not so active no more.. Such as Eritreans, Oromos/Ethiopians, an Afro American, some of European descent and a few arabs and some who hide their ethnic background for whatever reasons..
They are all welcome and no one disrespects the genuine forumers who come on here.. It's the insincere ones *regardless of their background and beliefs* who only come here to troll and multi nick who are not welcome!

What's the point of having non-Somali members if they're idle and inactive? They are chased outta here quick by you rude inconsiderate skinnies that's why. Anyway my point was much larger than this.

No one is new. The only new members in the last couple years were the SomaliLife kids migrating over here cause their site sucks and it shuts down during Ramadan.

Somalinet is the mother of all somali websites. It has always been liberal (not much censorship) and this has its downside; I guess that makes it a "cult".

It fulfils an important gap on the somali digital landscape. But, many do not understand.

One major problem is the number of sub-sections. I fail to understand why there are just so many sections.

As regards non-somali members, I think anyone is welcome to be a member. I have not seen a button which says "ethnicity" or "nationality". In fact, the most memorable contributors were non-somalis.

P.s. I was probably one of the oldest members. I remember in the middle of the 90s when every member's screen name was "anonymous". I took almost sabbatical for 7 years. It still has that special touch but if you want to survive avoid religious topics if you don't share the "kaligii muslim" perspective

If you post nonsense and flood the forum then you' a troll. Many of us got to know each other over the years and actually formed an online friendship, some met others. If you're new, chances are no once knows you and that's not a bad thing. You know how that goes, I'm sure you've been the new kid before.

Welcome to the site anyways!

How to establish yourself on snet.

Step 1: Establish your tribe (may or may not be your real one)
Step 2: Frequent the politics sections (especially those of your established tribe)
Step 3: Start a few "my tribe/region is better than yours" skirmishes
Step 4: Participate in a full-fledged tribal e-war.

My friend this a therapeutic "institution" .
It is a platform for the most angry of all somalis to say whatever the @#!*% they wanna say as we cannot afford anybody blowing himself to pieces anymore . In that regard I would also like to bring to your attention that I have been selected as the adult who supervises these young { some not so young} people in their day to day social interaction .
I am pretty sure the Secret Service stole that idea from us
