Do you have individual Somalis you admire

That you pick some somali girl in your town is by itself very admirable? what did she do to deserve your admiration? Does she offer boarding and lodging to the destitute? to the people on the edge? victims of domestic violence?

I will also have to pick a former classmate of mine; When I went to University, I was the only foreigner in my class; I did not speak the language well and I had a gloomy picture of my future; this guy who now works in a financial house in Singapore said the following words " xxxx do not despair! You will soon graduate, get a job and buy a car". Walaahi, these words meant alot to my self esteem.

No.She was in University and always organising iftar and fund raisers when i first met her.

Hada,almost everything humanitary around here started with her.She is one of those people who is constantly doing something.Amazing person.

Yes, this guy is someone I really admire. I also recall one time at university when we did a project paper. Three of us, Jan, him and I. The professor gave the best grade to other two. He gave me a B without a reason. I asked him why the discreprency. He did not give me a valid reason apart from mentioning my language capability (it was not in an English speaking country). Hakan couldn't take it and he organised a petition against the professor.

Anyway, I undestand why some people admire their family or themselves, but since this is going to remain anonymous, it is better that we talk about people who may all know or you can share us with their names. For me, I alwasy look for a Somali person taht I can admire and see a public figure. I would like to admire the three Samatars ( the Proffesors) and Nuraddin Farah, but they sound very hostile to Islam, a religion that is important to me.
I do not mind non-practising Muslim Somalis though as long as they do not display hositily toward the religion.

I would also like to admire Hadraawi as a poet but the guy has snm history. Some of my favoriate people include singers.

It baffles me how a conservative Somali can admire Nuraddin Farah. He caters to non-Muslim audience, as he wrote 100% of his works in non-Somali language. His works didn't shed his own people in positive light; he associated them with bestiality. About the Samatars, isn't there one Samatar who is pro-Islam? Maybe I'm confusing with another pro-Islam professor who debated one Samatar.

For me, I admire wadaads/sheikhs, like Boqolsoon (AUN).

Islam reached East Africa during the Sahaba (radiyalaahu canhum) era. The Omanis controlled much of East Africa way before Aweys time. Plus, Aweys died in early 1900.

The Sahaba may have had a few families in a few coastal towns. Omanis controlled the coastal towns when their ships were in port. It was not in their interest to have Muslims among the slaved populations. Islam reached the inland parts of southern Somalia only in Sheik Aweys' time.

It was his writings that were so important, especially in combating the influences of Christian missionaries and ending the Arab branch of the slave trade.

Of course, I'm sure you will take the position of the Salihiya, that Aweys, as a Sufi and a member of the Banidiir Ulema, was a purveyor of shirk and should properly be ignored. I disagree.

Roodo Af Jano and Sh. Hassan Turki. They are the purest Somalis living today. I do admire them, but from old Somalis, I got a dozen of them. Sayid Mohamed, Nuur Cabuhiye, Qamaan Bulxan, Qoorleex, Faarax wiil-waal and Raage Ugaas. I never fed up reading or listening to stories about their lives. They were Noble Somalis with vision and clean heart.

Nuura Diin, Omaar, Samatars and rest famous politicians are not my cup of tea. Every time I try to admire them, they fail me or disappoint me in the same minute. I call them opportunists and I never admire some one who is not risk taker!

Gobdoon, saaxiib, you missed that Nuura Diin is from my tribe as well and though many people admire him, I don't eventually. I'll have to first admire the good people from my yard and then I'll do list those in next doors. These few men and woman are people I read lot about their contribution to Somali culture and land mass. They are close to each other in vision or quality wise. They were for all Somalis in different era and centuries. But that does mean there are no other admirable Somalis from my next doors. One was Xaaji Cabaas from Zeyla, Timo Cade... etc.
