Somalia: Puntland President signs Political Party Act into law

GAROWE, Somalia Jul 7 2012 (Garowe Online) - Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole signed the Puntland Political Party act into law on Saturday, Garowe Online reports.
The act was proposed in parliament and had been approved after three weeks of discussions by the house of representatives.

At the signing, Vice President Abdisamad Ali Shire, Chairman of the Puntland Electoral Commission Dr. Mohamed Hassan Barre, ministers, other Puntland officials and media witnessed the milestone event in Puntland politics.
President Farole expressed his appreciation for the work that the electoral commission accomplished in transitioning the Puntland political arena towards democracy.
"Truthfully I'm very pleased that Puntland successfully adopted a constitution and has accomplished the huge step of moving towards a democratic government based on political parties," said President Farole.
Chairman Dr. Mohamed Hassan Barre stated that the signing of the agreement paves the way for a democratic system in Puntland.
"One of the political goals for this government had been to transition the Puntland government to a democratic system, we have achieved a major political goal," said Dr. Barre.
Political parties across Puntland will now be able to register their parties if they meet the number of constituents required by the electoral commission guidelines.
