LOL@comparing the Umayyads with Al saud. Omar ibn Abd al aziz raximahullah was considered by many to be the unofficial 5th rightly guided Caliph and not to mention being a descendant of Omar al Khattab RA. Even the worst Ummayad was better than the al saud.
Well, the worst Ummayad would be Yaziid bin Mucaawiya. And most of the major scholars(including Ahmed bin Hanbil) used to curse him every time his name came up. Some called him an outright kaafir, others just a faasiq. To put this in perspective, not even Abu Jahl had his name routinely cursed.....only Caliph Yaziid of House Ummayah.

The reality is, the Ummayads(including Mucaawiya) were no different than any other ruling family, past or present, muslim or non-muslim. Same motivation: power-lust & greed. Islam was an afterthought. Preservation of power was the #1 motivator, and would be the impetus for all of the atrocities they would commit during their 80 year rule.

This isn't meant to demonise them; just matter-of-fact truths. Many of the Ummayads were great statesmen, capable generals, and even personally pious. But before anything else, they were a family-run business for the benefit and glory of Bani Umamayah.

What I meant was that even the worse Umayyad had more power, prestige and wealth than any Saudi king. This was a time when the Arabs were the superpower of the world. But I do agree,
Yazid was a douche. The greatest dynasty ever, and by far my favourite, were the Abbasids. They were far more tolerant, intellectual and famous than the Umayyads.

This is generally true except for Mucawiya.
Khalifa Mucawiye still ruled more or less like the rashidun, he kept an open court he mixed with the people.
He avoided extravagant displays of wealth, he was still a tribal elder not a king like later bani ummaya.

Mucawiya was the closest in behaviour to the khulafa al rashidun, except he was politically savvy.

His reason for assuming rule was to prevent further discord and provide order.
and he was successful, his rule was long and peaceful and prosperous and the futux continued unabated.

careful there for his time he was a douche, but when you compare him to the best of today's leaders they will pale in comparison.
and the bani ummaya where the more egalitarian and tolerant than the abbasids.
The Abbasid adopted too many Persian customs.
There is very little difference between the courts of Kushraw parvais anushirwan and some of the later abbasids.
just remove the fire temples and the magi, replace them with mosques and they were identical.
