Those who've been to Somalia recently - is this true?

A number of countries have banned very thin plastic bags, including China, South Africa, Kenya, Uganda and Bangladesh - in Bangladesh's case, it was found that the bags had clogged up the drainage system, exacerbating deadly floods.


A handful of countries have banned plastic bags altogether, including Rwanda and Somalia, while some like Tanzania have banned ultra-thin bags.

I have only been to Hargeisa..and there plastic bags are known as the 'ubaxa Hargeisa' or something like that lol. Don't know about other areas though.

It has been more than 10 years since I have been to Somalia & though some government department(s) might say they banned plastic bags I don't think at this time & the economic reality on the ground they can enforce such ban. It even says in the link posted by mandeeq that although it was officially banned in Somaliland years ago still the people are using them.

Even here in Australia where I live, those bags we used to call 'bac qafiif' were banned and you have to buy instead thick, reusable ones that cost extra 10 cents but still it didn't stop people from buying plastic bags & dumping them, though of course their effect is not as much as before.

Banning things never work in somalia. There is a plastic bag plant in Mogadishu. One of the few goods somalis produce on their own right now.
