Mogadishu: the good news is...

Postby waryaa » Sat Dec 29, 2012 1:35 pm

...the government controls all corners of the city with iron fist.

Today, we were driving near the weapons market (cir togte) when a bunch of men, some in military uniform came running out of a nearby alley toward us. Then people, not knowing what is happening started running to different directions. Even our bodyguard jumped out of the car and ran to a nearby shop (the guy who was supposed to protect us). I and my driver decided not to go anywhere and stopped the car in the middle of the road. The whole mess was created by a tip that a convoy of the national security/intelligence services (NSS) was about to pass the area. And yes, three tactical vehicles full of young, well disciplined NSS members came rolling and passed us slowly. We waved and greeted them with respect.

The point is the era of chaos and lawlessness is about to end and the bad guys have been defeated badly.

Bodyguards are full of shiid unless they are your closest kin and are well paid.

Waryaa,

Good news but remember that it requires addressing the root causes of the Isbaaro: poverty among soldiers. They resort to what they have to do which is living off the population. Until, the government starts paying all gunmen, government or freelance, the isbaaro culture will be hard to defeat. The NSS are the most financially stable of the units because they have foreign bosses.

The most honest gunmen is the one who sells his weapons to buy groceries. Shiid, didn't even know you could buy groceries using bullets as cash.

Mogadishu is a lost cause, no matter how people try to spin the reality.

I am just glad there are other cities in Somalia where the average citizen feels safe day and night.

All the smart people have sold their properties and investing their money where it's worth it.

He had a good excuse. They'd demand to confiscate the gun and kill him if he tries to hesitate. They'd also give the rest of us hard time. We had legal papers but sometimes they ask for it after the damage is done.

Reminds me of a story/riddle I was told years ago. A businessman is about to go on a trip abroad. The morning before he departs his watchman (the guy who keeps watch over the house at night) comes to him during breakfast and tells him that he had a dream that night that the plane the businessman was going to board would explode. For some reason he ended up missing his flight and sure enough the plane exploded. Now in that situation what should you be thankful that your watchman's dream saved your life or concerned that your watchman had a dream in the first place.
