Anything can be harmful, the key is moderation. I have cut out red meats out of my diet but I am tempted here and there to have hilib adhi when I visit my family. If you exercise/burn enough calories you will be fine.
You can't eat healthy and be a fat ass(lazy) and expect to look healthy because eating healthy is half the battle.

Once you cut out lamb you're half way there. No one should eat these :x

Unfortunately and among other things our socio-economic status plays a big role in determining what foods we consume & how easily it is available to us.

Going vegan alone simply doesn't cut it, there are tons of processed "vegan" products out there which defeats the whole purpose of being a proactive consumer. I always found moderation in lean meat consumption, limiting processed foods to a minimum or cutting them out all together, physical activity and consuming whole organic foods (specially organic produce) as a long-term lifestyle to be far more sustainable. Going vegan makes people feel a sense of deprivation, just like how most people on fad "diets" feel and ultimately forces them to quit and relapse back to their unhealthy lifestyles.

All these diseases are lifestyle, metabolic disorders brought on by our modern day living. It's a multi-billion dollar industry that could easily be dealt with if governments placed more rigid food policies on agri-corps to cut down on the big culprits i.e. high fructose corn syrup, triglycerides, and others. And if "food deserts" were rectified, if consumers took the time to learn just what it is they are being fed and if people had more access to healthcare i.e. early diagnosis and better prevention, instead of last minute diagnosis at the ER (which is how many people even find out they have type 2 diabetes). It's no longer limited to others, Somalis are coming down with all sorts of metabolic diseases lately and specially with type 2 diabetes & hypertension. Information is key.

Anarchist,

How did you feel after cutting out red meat from your diet ?

Any particular things to watch out for if one attempts to go vegan ? Is there a good compromise to prep you into the transition ? My liver enzyme, ALT elevates slightly every other year, ruled out fatty deposits, cut down the meds and the doc tells me that a lot of these so called baseline levels are created are Causcasian centric and thus for minorities our levels can be a tad bit higher and still be normal. He also ruled out Hep. I did some major exercise and dropped my weight 20lbs in 6 weeks and voila, down to normal.

Abdi - I wasn't too big on red meat to start with, so it didn't affect me all that much. I always preferred fish over meat and when it was finally time for me to cut back on it, it wasn't all that bad. I still have a good steak once in a while and was at a Thai restaurant over the weekend, while everyone else ordered chicken, I went for their pepper steak and a clam-calamari-mushroom soup which I was amazed at how good it was. You couldn't tell it from looking at it, but I was very much impressed at how they pulled it all together with the clams adding a certain sweetness to the soup. As long as the red meat is lean & in moderation, preferably comes from grass fed cows & is hormone free, it's fine. I couldn't go vegan, it's just not in me.

Took these for my blog:

Not sure if you're familiar with it, but the paleo diet is a great way to stay away from refined sugar & all the high carb meals our diet revolves around, so maybe give that a try. I haven't had sugar in almost 3 weeks now and have more energy than ever before, no dips & hikes in my insulin levels, no need to force the liver to metabolize unnecessary quantities of fructose (since no other organ in the body metabolizes fructose, the liver is forced to work over-time to metabolize it and this easily leads to non-alcohol fatty liver & liver cirrhosis). You know how in the late 70s, the medical community went apeshit about cutting back on fat? That meant manufacturers had to resort to an alternative and thus the birth of high fructose corn syrup. Which meant consumers ended up doubling & quadrupling their sugar consumption and thus all the metabolic diseases we're faced with today. I eat an organic egg every morning and my liver functions & LDL cholesterol are perfect for my age, it's all bullshit. Eggs provide essential Omega-3 fatty acid which the body needs and are an excellent source of protein.

Nothing like being healthy, sxb. Invest in it now. Fork over the knife, any day.

Anarchist,

I have been cured of my GERD for over 2 years now simply due to eating more fiber, cutting out the fatty foods and losing weight. But you are absolutely right that the faster you take care of your body, the longer it treats you right.

Well, I will keep you posted on my trials and travails.

P.S. I am feigning for some BBQ Beef Ribs with coselaw, mashed potatoes, corn off the cob and cornbread before I go vegan. Something about BBQ beef ribs 8-)

And i am not willing to learn anything about it. Just mentioning my shortfalls in English literature. Cunto waan cunaa laakiin sidaan uma raac raaco.

Not saying anything wrong with you fellas. Anigaa isla yaabay.
