Contrary to popular belief the medieval muslims weren't any more religious than you or me. in fact, the opposite is true. You should read history books, the stuff they did and wrote about would make us look like the Taliban in comparison.

They are still Arabs.. this does not safeguard them against "wailul lil arab"

True the most highly developed parts of the muslim world before the mongol holocaust like Balkh(western afghanistan), Khorasan, Parts of syria like halab/allepo, and andalusia couldbe considered too liberal by the standards of today, but normal by the more secular time of our parents generations.
for example the hijab was not common place, the way it wasnt among somalis in the 60's.
and in cities like merve and nishapur where omar khayam was from, there was a bar/tavern in every street corner.
