Le Justicier,
Saaxib, could you share with us how it helped? I have friends (somalis and non somalis) who claim that therapy is helping but, I have concluded that the so called therapy actually works on the parents; they accept the situation and believe in the therapy.
My sister was trained by specialist untill she became speech and language therapist. I am sure she use to spent with her son 10 hours a day. just to teach him not only the language but also with other issues. She is devoted to her son.....
Waan ku bari karaa hadaad rabto inaad soo interview garayso.

Le justicier
That's very admirable. I wish more and more Somali parents took such initiative and devotion when faced with such circumstances. I believe children are resilient no matter what condition they are born with and given support will excel in their own unique way. In my experience, children born with Autism spectrum disorders are among the most intelligent.
yeah, you once told me you're among medical staff.

LJ,
Waa runtaa. And we do not know how many of the victims of this disease will fare in adulthood. It is really depressing.

Autism such as Dustin Hoffman's character in the Rainman is fine, but, there are many other forms which are horrible. The last few weeks, I visited 4 somali families and all of them had autistic children.

On a related issue:

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is also a big problem in the somali community. In the west, many of our boys are diagnosed as suffering from it when they show behaviour that is different than the norm.

LJ Lol@@ OCD. Oo maxaa dhacay ma iskaabulonimada ayaad ku raagtay?

You know what saaxib? Many of us would have been diagnosed with some kind of psychological and psychiatric ailments had we been born in the west.

In my case I think its genetic. 4 member of family show signs of OCD in their adolescents. Luckily, its mild one. I can't stand touching the door handles, tauching public keyboards or anywhere rails on buses etc. I hate seeing people blowing their noses, people spitting in the street etc.
I agree with you hadii layna baadhi lahaa wax badan baa soo bixi lahaa

LOL@genetic

I once called my late mother - she is obviously in janna- and informed her that I was cooking and cleaning? She almost got a heart attack and asked:

War ma qorqod baad noqotay? Maxaa kushiinka ku geliyey? oo naag guriga kuu xaaqdo miyaad weydey?

In the good old baadiyo days women used to redicule men who came into kitchens and sung:

Qorqod qooraansi dheer, dheryaha qooraaminayo, waa nin qaldane habloow iska qabta

I am suffering from chronic premature middle age crises; nostalgia, melancholia and grumpiness are my companions.

Majority of Somali parents in diaspora don't even look after their children properly. They don't control their diet, sleeping patterns, school work, general health, madrasa work etc. How do you expect them to know about Autism when they don't know whether their child is at home. They need to quit having too much kids and focus on developing a mature healthy educated child. Sometimes I feel annoyed of being Somali!

Waxay arkeen anigoo qado karinaya markay xaaskaygu shaqo tagto. Shock ayaa ku wada dhacay. Maantana Hooyo markaan ugu tago gurigeeda ku yaala EALING waxay tidhaahda hooyo adaa cunta macaane ky tuur, hablaha walaalahaa maanta uun aan ka nastee waxay walaaqaan  .
Middle age crises iyo nostalgia igamaba dhamaadaan. btw. WTF melancholia and grumpiness? grumpiness ma marka gafuurka la buuraa iyadoon cidina waxba kugu samayn?

LJ,
Anigu weli waxaan ahay conservative; soomaalidda waxaay tiraahdaa "laafyo aadan u dhalanin laba talaabo laguma gaaro". In kastoo aan isku dayo inaan guriga nadiifiyo ama raashin kariyo, si fiican uguma soo baxo hawsha.Dumarkuna waa cajiib saaxib; intaay ku oran lahaayeen waad dadaashay ayaay ku cambaareeyaan. Waxaan maqli jirey naagi nimaay legedo kama kacdo.

Melancholio waa calaamadaha lagu arko dadka uu ku soo socdo cudurka depression; niyad jab, aamusnaan iyo qoomameeyn ayaa lagu gartaa.

Grumpiness; waa cudur da'eed; markii aad ka xanaaqdo wax waliba; waa cudur cajuusadeed oo ragga ku dhaco.

Ximaan Jaale; any remedies?

Nin yahow aniga markay dhaqan somali timaado I have a tendency to be cadaan. My house we share everythings. Qofka nagu soo degana waxaanu ka codsanaa inuu integration sameeyo oo keligii cuntada soo gurto etc. Switzerland dadka Somalidu wuu ku yaraa, markasta waxaad la associate-garaynaysaa dad cad. Waanan hubaa in impact ay kugu reebi karto. Ta kale grumpiness waan hubaa inaan qabo laakiinse melancholio weli iskuma arag.

LJ, gartay. Anigu inta badan noolasheedyda waxaan deganaa dibadda. Waxaan ahay qof well integrated - on the border to full assimilation. Dabiicadeeyda iyo dhaqankeeyga guud waa sida dadka cadaanka ah. Laakin xagga arrimaha guriga iyo fanka weli waxaan ahay soomaali dhab ah ; reer miyi asal ah. Soomaalinadu wax keli ah oo iigu xero waa sidaan u dhaqmo gurigeeyga iyo fanka soomaaliyeed.

Lamagoodle,

Remedies: Raising awareness and bettering the parental skills of Somalis. The big question is who will start of this task? Everyone is busy with its own individual life.

I hope medicine finds the answer. There are currently studies going on and some of them are promising.

Ma fahamin!

There was a study published yesterday which seems to suggest that the culprit could be the father's age!
