THE death toll from a British explosion of bird flu could hit 750,000.
Chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson gave the grim warning yesterday as he predicted the killer virus will definitely reach the UK.
Sir Liam said the terrifying toll would be a possibility under certain conditions.
First, bird flu would have to mutate into a new strain that can easily be passed from human to human.
At the moment bird flu is passed between poultry — or in some cases, from infected birds to humans who have come into close contact with them.
The new human strain would also need to be a potential killer — and scientists would have failed to find an effective vaccine.
