What the Egyptians did is create a letter based on a thing object animal etc that started with that letter they wanted to make, for an example lets say the letter M would be a picture of Mouse because Mouse starts with M. And W would be a picture of a wire because Wire makes the W sound at the start etc.
Simple enough, all right so with that they created HIEROGLYPHICS, as we all know,
then they made a cursive version of it, and called it Hieritic. Which the Arabic script has its roots in.
Im learning to read this script it's pretty simple actually. Then I can read hieroglyphics and see if there's any somali words, because no one knows how to pronounce Hieroglyphics maybe with a cushitic accent it can sound right. Some common Somali words have been found in ancient Egyptian. But check out Hieritic we somalis can learn this within a day and write with it.
Hieroglyphics to Hieratic

and here's a link of the Egyptian roots of the Arabic script.
