Islam feminists urge gender jihad

By Danny Wood

BBC News, Madrid

Organisers of the first international congress on Islamic feminism are calling for a "gender jihad".

Organiser Abdennur Prado Pavon says the struggle for gender equality in Islamic countries involves refuting chauvinist interpretations of Muslim teachings.

The congress is being held in Spain, organisers say, because they want their message to reach the growing number of Muslim women in Europe.

Around 300 delegates are looking at women's rights in the Islamic world.

Mr Prado, of the Catalan Islamic board, believes a common misconception in the West is that women's liberation is not possible in Muslim societies.

Activists representing the Islamic feminist movement are in Barcelona to counter that view and discuss ways of achieving female equality in an Islamic context.

Collaboration

Among the delegates is the Pakistani feminist Riffat Hassan, regarded as one of the pioneers of Islamic feminist theology.

Also here are representatives from the international association, Islamic Feminism.

Islamic Feminism argues that the inferior legal and social status of women in Muslim countries is a result of misogynistic distortions of the teachings in the Koran.

Organisers say they want more collaboration with western feminists but say non-Muslim feminists need to challenge their anti-Islamic stereotypes.

As a former member of the eco-feminist group, I personally have seen the awful subjectivity that pierces through their ideologies. And their failure to welcome the ideas that did not coincide with theirs—gosh u no what feminist are ungrateful first and foremost.(let me just get that off my chest)

I feel feminism is a sickness that has damaged and hurt men and women in different ways and has damaged our marriages and social structure. If ever the devil was to find a way to keep people further from God, he could do it by turning men and women against each other. He waited for our modern day for his feminism plan to work though. Laughing Women cannot deny their need for a man internally, nor can men deny their need for a woman. However in our modern day western wealth, that need is hidden in the form of pride, bitterness, selfishness, and greed to name just a few reasons.

Also one major failure I see and huge flaw with feminism is how they only achieve the standards of ‘the man’, so they haven’t really set out any different reachs/goals, its purely there to be like ‘men’ …and that’s a great shame cos the potential of many feminist groups could actually do a lot of good for women. Now in regards to Muslim-Feminists being an oxymoron, ive got to agree with you, although it is part of the evolving history we see in many text books. Their struggle then and now are similar, but the term feminism wasn’t misused and it genuinely stressed a collective problem women were facing on a day-to-day basis.

But I love what these muslim women are doing, and they are creating a sweeping revolution and are finally getting heard…but as the cynic that I am, its gonna take a whole lotta time, so fingers crossed lol

so ... who says they hurt our families? yes, they hurt familial crap based on patriarchal stuff. that doesn't hurt us... as people... but it dismantles discrimination.

imho, these women are doing things some muslim women have done forever. don't know if they will have an impact... but i love them for trying.
