because basically the government is not making any money from these companies and given the fact that so many people are using these apps to communicate their loved ones abroad, especially in the middle east and Africa, makes them want to do something about it. and what else is better than instilling fear and confusion in their own citizens by using their favorite weapon, " fighting Islamic terrorism or radical Muslims." thing.
