Grant, you cant take a joke can you? good grief, why are you so stoic? I know these people are not gonna hurt you. btw, Grant, what was your greatest memory about that place?
People, food, climate. Maybe the real Gosha Mufo Tinaar. It's nothing like sabayad. I loved that stuff with beer ari.
If Somalia was peaceful today would you have made a journey to your youthful day's place?
My plan when I first came to Somalinet was to retire there.
Did you enjoy the natural fruits ? The Mango?
I liked shushoonlo, the small ones; but the bigger ones were mostly too acidic for my teeth. I also never got used to the strings. Papaya and Pummelos were more my cup of tea. The commercial bananas were good, but what I really enjoyed were the smaller Zanzibarinas.
Did you thought about marrying one of the girls back then?
There was this girl called Sultana.... but she shot me down.
Most importantly, how did you arrive into Somalia? Was by way of Mogadishu?
We flew from Aden to Hargeisa in a wwII plane with no seats and bullet holes for windows. Spent two weeks at Taleex and then traveled to Xamar and then Kismayu by trade truck. Traveled to Jilib in a VW bus on a brand-new asphalt road.
Before you were assigned to Somalia, did you ever heard of it
Never. I had to look at a map.

have you even entertained settling in the Republic of Somaliland? Its peaceful you know! I am willing to allow you live in my own bought far in the outskirts of the state capital Hargeisa. You just pay a guard to secure your life and you also carry a pistol. I will even through a male and female camels and a young fresh girl of the age of 14 to be your wife enter you expire!Menace,
You are adding questions faster than I can answer.
Somalis are a good-looking people. Keep in mind that Americans may be fat, but our models are skinny.
Somali culture fits the landscape and some Somalis are beyond bright. Sadly, my students were just beginning English and learned very slowly.
Somali xenophobia is notorious and unhelpful. I think the pride is also somewhere in there. Not especially useful.

she was called Umm (something)... you would be shocked to find out that she was actually AfricanTo answer the question, was it Faatima (radiyallahu canha)?

Fair enough...I guess snet fills in as replacement ...Menace,
That is quite an offer, but one I must decline. A Somali retirement has passed me by. Even if peace were to arrive in Jilib in the next few years, I am too old to start again, and the North would just not be the same. We have a large extended family in the Philippines and investments there and are setting up to shuttle back and forth. But, thank you.
