tbf, I think he misinterpreted Phink's thread about white women.
As for the post, I think he could've easily used any name to highlight the rampant hypocrisy of Somalis, although poor Phinks was used as a placeholder. Although Leftist's beliefs regarding slavery and other "controversial" aspects of Islam are usually wrong, I do respect his ability to examine the wholly superficial nature of post-civil war Somali Islam and the ridiculous notion that what we wear, the names we pick for our children, and the use of Arabic terms is in any way indicative of some sort of religious revival.
Despite all evidence (24+ years of unrelenting horror of almost every conceivable kind) pointing to the contrary, there are people who will unironically claim Somalis are now more religious than they used to be. Apparently a nation can become more religious although you kill people, steal their land, rape women to death, worship your clan ancestors, sell your clan to the highest bidder, sell your nation's resources to whoever, steal aid meant for your starving compatriots, accept bribes from foreign companies to literally dump nuclear waste in your seas, enslave/ethnically cleanse your ethnic minorities, force them to buy their own river water, use drugged up child soldiers to fight, invite foreign troops to occupy "enemy" territory and kill all who stand in your way, kill your neighbor because your colonial master drew a line on a map way back when and also because you don't like their particular "Arab" patriarch, kill your neighbor because you don't like their particular patriarch or their interpretation of the magical line, kill your neighbor because they don't like federalism, kill your neighbor because you don't like their interpretation of federalism, and worst of all, have refugees who fled that hellhole send cayr money to make refugees out of the other clan.
But yacni akhi we are much more religious because I wear a khamiis on Friday's and my children have reached the 5th juz, btw qolomaa tahay and lacagtii lagaa rabay ma haysaa?
Saaxib get a grip. Nowhere did I claim that Somalis were perfect, and your anecdotal stories of atrocities which have occurred over the past 25 years doesn't mean the overall trend in the opposite direction doesn't exist
Anyone who grew up during the Kacaan era would testify that Islam played a background role in Somali affairs during the 1970's and 1980's. Somalis rarely prayed, rarely fasted, and it was all too common to see Somali women exposing their arms, legs, and hair. I have Somali uncles telling me that anyone who even prayed 5 times a day during that era, was considered to be a "Sheikh" since doing so wasn't very common in Somali society.
And this isn't only something that went on in Somalia, in fact the ENTIRE Muslim world was like this as well, including Saudi Arabia. Back in the 1970's, the Muslims who lived in Egypt and Pakistan and Indonesia were secular--often Marxist--who thought religion was outdated and should play a background role in society.
Just look at what Gamal Abdel Nasser used to say about wearing the hijaab, and this was back in the 1960's:
This speech (and the reaction of the crowd) paints a pretty accurate picture of how Muslims used to think back in that era. Ask ANYONE who lived during that time and they'll tell you the same thing. There is an Islamic revival, it's very real, it's very strong, and it's taking place in every Muslim nation. Read about it:
