Somalia are from the Horn of Africa. Being Arab (no matter how stupid it is to claim an identity which isn't yours) shouldn't change that fact. Many North Africans are Berbers but have been claiming Arab for centuries. Ethiopian aristocracy claimed to be Caucasian and this didn't change the fact that they were Africans. Africa is a geographical location and not a race.No doubt that much of the rest of the world now see somalis more as arabs than as africans. I see it as a win/win for both sides.
Right! I think when one speaks of "regarding themselves as africans", i think thatreference has more to do with having some sort of empathy with other africans. Most somalis empathize with arabs....feel more of a connection with arabs more than with any other groups. again its a win/win situation for somalis as well as other people from the continent for this professor to make this known. Somalis themselves want this known. I think it is ok for somalis to feel that way and i think its ok for the professor to state that without passing judgement. It is good for everyone to be aware of the feelings of others. That's why forums like these are so valuable.Somalia are from the Horn of Africa. That's not strictly true either. We have some negative opinions regarding Arab culture and even a racist term to describe them so we're not that hurt if they call us names too. We're a distinct ethnic group. This doesn't blind us however from the horrible things happening in the Middle East. We're Muslim and we feel for other Muslims. Trust me very few Somalis care about Arab Jews, Christians and Atheists. We don't feel an affinity with North Africans either even though they're Muslim, Arab and African simply because they have their shit together and don't need our prayers. If they got invaded, we'd care because it could have been us. America has done a good job demonising Islam through its Middle Eastern foreign policy. It's OK to feel empathy with Muslims in the Middle East without being a coconut or worse.Right!
