Somaliland hopes Brexit will pave way for UK to grant international recognition - The Guardian

Postby Ben Dover » Wed Oct 19, 2016 12:08 pm

As Berbera port deal opens global trade gateway, Somaliland optimistic that freedom from EU policy will allow Britain to acknowledge self-declared state
Britain’s looming departure from the EU may be a fraught issue at home, yet in one corner of the Horn of Africa hopes are harboured of a very definite Brexit dividend.

The government of Somaliland believes the impending split marks a pivotal moment, one that will free the UK to grant the self-declared state the international recognition it has been seeking for more than 25 years.

[...]

Shire’s comments come at a potentially transformative moment not just for the former British protectorate but also for the wider east African region, after one of the world’s largest port operators announced a 30-year concession to manage and develop Somaliland’s Berbera port.

The $442m (£360m) deal between DP World and Somaliland – which has long sought deep-pocketed investors to modernise the port and exploit its offer of a free trade zone around Berbera – heralds a new gateway for trade between east Africa and the rest of the world.

i wonder why the idoor are still dreaming of this so called ictiraaf. let me break it down for you why Somaliland will not be granted any recognition.

1. Somaliland is a one clan (idoor) Project and dont have the rest of the clans in their pocket.majority of Awdal region and gadabursis are very pro somalia thus unionists to the core and this was evident as people once sung somalia national Anthem on SL event.

2. the harti and infact the only clan who some consider to have the VETO vote on Somalilands succession are very pro somalia and unionists too. harti will infact be the ones who will eventually put the Nail on the coffin of SL once and for all.

3. on international level USA clearly stated where it stands on this matter by saying they only recognize United somalia. not forgetting the strong lobby Groups of somali diasporas in USA. any policy in somalia has to go around USA and thus Britain will certainly not make any decision on Somaliland without the consent of USA.

4. On regional level Djibouti does not want to see Somaliland granted any ictiraaf as Djibouti wants to keep having monopoly on the horn trade routes or it will lose alot of Revenues if SL opens Another gateway( probably cheaper).

# 1 is meaningless there isn't a condition for a recognition , the law doesn't say you have to be 20 tribes or ethinic group.

# 2 the Harti are a minority , their entire numbers in Somaliland combined don't even equal that of the Jibriil Abokor in Gebilay.

# 3 , jabuuti has no leverage on Somaliland a country 10 times its size and populations.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “It is for Somalia and Somaliland to decide their future, and for regional neighbours to take the lead in recognising any new arrangements.”

The hypocrisy is mind numbing , so UK can separate from Europe based on vote of their populations alone , but Somaliland has to negotiate with its enemies and only then they can go apart . Its like asking the Palestinians to get a recognitions from the Jews.

Lol you are full of excuses. No dead idoor soldiers, just darod malitia sent to arrest their own.

Tell us exactly why darod is under somaliland? Why don't you put the Somalia flag in lascanod and bring it under Somalia? No more excuses otherwise I won't take you seriously
