This Dhabayaco kid doesn't know shit about history.

The Italians are known in Europe as the Midgo. They are looked down by the Aryans and Anglo-saxons of northern Europe. The Italians being those midgo, still managed to build an apartheid system in ex-Italian Somalia. By apartheid, I mean, the hutu and Dhabayaco were not allowed to venture into Italian neighborhoods, nor where they allowed to seat next to an Italian. In fact, there were bus stops one for "Negro" and one for "Europa" in Mogadishu streets.

The Italians built Mogadishu into Pearl city of the Indian occean - i.e. a holiday destination and lived the life. Night clubs, casino and what have you. All for the lavish entertainment of the elite rulers.

While the colonised Somalis were in fact where treated like shit and lived in a dark dismal life without any representation in the corridors of power.

Things changed when in 1944 during WW2, the British kicked out the Italians from Somalia and for the first time, the Union Jack flew high and mighty over all the Somali speaking territories short of Djibouti - Djibout being part of France and part of the allied forces.

The British abolished the apartheid system that the Italians stablished. And for the first time in 50 years, Somalis in Mogadishu and elsewhere were able to freely move around their country. Truely a transformative period for the colorized lots.

It was during this period of British rule that a young poet from Hargeisa travelled to Mogadishu. Something that was not possible before. And during his stay in Mogadishu, he gathered what life was like in the Pearl city on Indian ocean. What he saw during his stay was an eye openner.

During the few years of British rule the oppressed colonised people made a lot of progress. SYL was established, semi-democracy was introduced. And eventually the Power was transferred to United Nations for 10 year period.

The young poet composed a long poem of which I can only remember:

Hadaan dabo-yartu daadihinayn,
ama dibi-daati daaya lahayn,
Dameerka Abagaalba waa dili.

Apparently the poem refers to how things have changed during the British rule and the previously out of limits nightclubs and entertainment areas were accessible to the Somalis in general. So what the Italians did were they employed Abgaal pouncers in entertainment areas. So the poet is saying, only if you were holding hands with a Dhabayco mini-skirted girl or you have your paperwork organised can you pass that bad ass Abgaal bouncer.
