I have no culture or language with somali. I don't eat somali food, I don't speak somali, I don't talk to somali people, I never been to Somalia. I was born in this country, America. We Somalis reject "black" as an identity. Because black is a western identity trap, that renders you alienated without any framework for social development. What sense is it to confine ourself to a name that only reflects our skin color.

Just because we share skin color with AAs or other Africans doesn't mean we have the same values, cultures or live in the same reality as them. This doesn't mean we see ourselves as surperior, it just means we see ourselves as distinct.

So i agree with your Aunt. She is very much correct you are Somali not black. Black is an empty color abstract with no refrence attached to it, while your Somaliness on the other hand connects you to land, culture and history.

Lastly we understand the reality of discrimination and racism in the west, it's just not our identity. Racism and discrimination does not describe us. Ask yourself if the only difference is skin complexion and being at the bottom of every social economic indicator. Then how is that an identity?

There is no wonder why Somalis feel a sense of inadequaucy when it comes to the super-imposition of blackness. Because it takes them away from their claim to land, culture and history and renders them into homeless marginalized "other" with no refrence.

Europe has done a good job of imposing on Africans notions of identity based not on geography or ethnicity, but relative color.

An identity is generally geographical and ties the people to their native environment or their core doctrine. For Indians it is their land, for Chinese it is their land, for Jews it is their faith.

It is difficult to convey this to Somali youth who are more invested into fitting in and chasing trends.
