Creeping paranoia in Djiboutian diplomatic circles

THE INDIAN OCEAN NEWSLETTER ISSUE 1478 DATED 19/07/2018
Image result for Mahmoud Ali YoussoufIn a missive addressed to his ambassadors which The Indian Ocean Newsletter has obtained a copy of, the Djiboutian foreign minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has expressed himself in very undiplomatic terms, reflecting the anxiety of the Djiboutian authorities in the face of the current rapprochement between Addis Ababa and Asmara. The minister is of the view that the Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed Ali is guilty of 'reckless haste' and is using his country's status as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council to secure the lifting of sanctions on Eritrea, without giving due thought to the negative impact this may have on Djibouti...

After this diatribe against the rapprochement between Ethiopia and Eritrea and the policies of the Ethiopian prime minister, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf goes on to express his concern at 'the interference and meddling of the United Arab Emirates in this reconfiguring of alliances in the sub-region'. He describes this Gulf state as 'the armed wing and bankroller of the strategy of the new US administration' and claims that the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan (MbZ), has pledged 'billions of dollars in deposits and investments' in exchange for Ethiopia extending the hand of friendship to Asmara.

He then seizes the opportunity to criticise the Frud arme, 'hosted and supported by Eritrea', a country which will soon be seeing Ethiopian businesses setting up shop and operating out of the port of Assab rather than the port of Djibouti. He therefore recommends 'a clear and unambiguous statement to Ethiopia of our position and our displeasure'.

The end of this memo reads almost like a threat to Ethiopia, 'this country [which] has not yet left its turbulent times behind' and where 'the risk of implosion is not to be underestimated [...] given[the forthcoming] operations to harness the oil and gas resources of the Ogaden'.

Djibouti is kinda in trouble from the UAE but it will over come this . Djibouti will use its good ties with the USA and Saudi Arabia to fight The geopoltical war against Eritrea and the Emirates.. The Saudis will have a.military personal in djibouti The djibouti govt will use maxammad him Salman to tell the Emirates to back off.
The Emirates are pissed of how djibouti treated them. Eritrea is an enemy and will be dealt with Inshallah we need to back Islamic Eritrean jihad and the aware tigre jebha alliance. To give the mad man in asmara a hard time inshallah kassala should be the new front

ethiopia will still do business with djibouti, just not as much. ethiopia has two things in mind, 1. as a huge nation, it needs several sea outlets, and 2. it can't always depend on one state to do business with, because interests and alliances change.
I do not think eritrea considers djibouti anything more than a business competitor. in war, with all due respect to somalis, eritrean can conquer djibouti in a few weeks, it would not be a fair fight, unless the other brave somali warriors come to their rescue.
i am not sure why djibouti kicked out the uae in the first place, do you know why? can you share why with us?

It all started with djiboutian military officer slapping an emirate diplomat relations went sour after that. And also before the lease contract ended the djiboutian govt undermined the Emirates there was a court case not sure if it's still ongoing the djibouti govt terminated an emirate contract and seized the control of the port in operation with out noticing the Emirates this made the Emirates furious and the situation further esclated ever since . Eritrea has an big army but djibouti has the USA France and the support of all Somalis so I doubt it wil go into an armed conflict but more geopolitical tit for tat

I do agree its a bussines war and Eritrea wants piece of the pie but it all depends on ethiopia they are the big market Eritrea is irrelevant as it stands now . Because it will take years for the 2 sides Ethiopia and Eritrea to proper reconcile even if Ahmed abiye made peace with isias afewerki what if the tigray peoples liberation front is still angry at Eritrea and isias afewerki it's still a problem kebessa tegaru conflict it's far from over.

why did djibouti terminate their contract though? why did they feel their sovereignty was being infringed upon?
one port is not enough for a nation of 100 million people, that's why you see port sudan being considered, assab/massawa, and djibouti. who knows, we may even use Kenyan ports too, if it's feasible. it'd work well for oromos who have clans near the ocean in kenya :) lol
as far as ethiopia and eritrea, peace is already established. tigray cannot do anything to stop it. ethiopia already bought shares in eritrean airlines, flights are already going back and forth, the use of assab port is starting sooner than later, etc.
