1925: C.Zoli 1st Gov of Giuba, in internal manual, warns "Confuse not Bon Marehan for the Waboni; it is internal issue"

Considering how animating some have found this reference, I will take this opportunity to put this into forum record.

Corrado Zoli was the 1st Italian "Viceroy" of new Oltre Giuba after the exchange with the British in which British Jubaland was ceded to Somalia Italiana.

An internal, private manual was written by Commissioner Corrado Zoli as a training manual and a new guide for Italian colonial authorities newly appointed to take positions of authority in Oltre Giuba.

It intended, among other things, to introduce them to the inhabitants of Oltre Giuba.

Well---Comm. Zoli---in this private, government manual---felt it warranted to point out and strongly caution that when they come across "Bon Marehan" or Hawlrarsame, they are in fact "pure", affirmed Somali Marehan different to the actual Waboni who live in the teritory whose only similarlty is the word "Bon," appropriated from the Waboni and applied as a slur for Hawlraraane given a historical bigotry within the Marehan clan for historic events.

The word appropriated from the Waboni to begin with, because of how reprehensibly Somalis have treated the Waboni.

So basically Corrado is saying the Waboni are ill-treated people to such an extent even their name is used as a pejorative for these guys to put each other down for issues between them but entirely irrelevant to the Waboni people.

What is so interesting about this is this is not an ethnographic piece. This is a military officer writing as precise a manual of reality as it exists for his subordinates with the intention of even impacting life and death situations. It is not critical theory reassessing social classification. He is a soldier-administrator and he is telling you what reality reflects as it is.

Do you know how much time and effort some people spent on this forum creating nothing out of where nothing exists.

Cheers!
