CARLSBAD – A 20-year-old Camp Pendleton Marine slashed his arms with a knife and led police on a short pursuit before they got him out of his car and stopped the bleeding Tuesday night.
In his car, officers found papers ordering the Marine back to Iraq, said Carlsbad police Lt. Kelly Cain.
Cain said he did not know if the deployment orders were the cause of the Marine's actions. He was admitted to a hospital for treatment of extensive injuries and a mental health evaluation.
The incident started about 8:20 p.m. when a woman called police to report that she had followed the Marine's sport utility vehicle from a Tamarack Avenue parking lot, where he had hit her car, to an In 'N Out Burger off Cannon Road. When he stopped and she approached his SUV, she saw that he was bloody and holding a knife.
Cain said officers broke a window of the Marine's SUV to get to reach him, but he drove off, heading north on Interstate 5. He exited at Tamarack Avenue and an officer used a spike strip to blow tires on the SUV. The Marine stopped. Officers applied direct pressure on his wounds until paramedics arrived.
Cain said the Marine, from Montana, is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. Officers confiscated a serrated folding knife from him.
