I don't think they handled it well.
Instead of threatening the TFG, they should have convinced the TFG that the ICU was not a threat to the TFG and willing to work w/ the TFG.
That's what Sh. Shariif was saying in his letters to the EU/AU/US/UN right after Xamar was captured and that was the smart thing to do.
It's quite possible that the ICU comitted a FATAL mistake in their attitudes.
Maybe it was something personal between A/Y and Aweys since their Puntland days and Aweys could not bring himself to sincerely negotiate w/ the TFG.
